Four tools. One pocket. Completely reimagined.
The First Mate launched in 2020 as the first product Pirate Goods ever made. This is v4 — a ground-up rethink of what a compact EDC organizer should be. Smaller than the original. More specific. Four dedicated slots: knife, flashlight, pen, and prybar. Everything has a place and nothing rattles.
It took a long time to get here. The proportions on this one are right.
The four slots
- Knife pocket — 11 cm (4.3″) deep. Medium: 5 cm (2″) wide. Large: 6 cm (2.4″) wide.
- Flashlight slot — sized to your specific flashlight diameter at checkout (see compatibility guide below).
- Pen slot — fits any regular pen up to 12 cm (4.7″) in length.
- Prybar slot — 9 cm (3.5″) deep. Medium: 3 cm (1.2″) wide. Large: 4 cm (1.6″) wide.
Medium or Large — which one?
The difference is in the knife pocket and prybar slot width. Everything else is identical.
- Medium — knife pocket 5 cm (2″) wide. Best for slimmer folders: Benchmade Bugout, Spyderco Para 3, similar.
- Large — knife pocket 6 cm (2.4″) wide. Better for wider knives: Benchmade Mini Adamas, Benchmade Griptilian, similar.
If you carry a thicker or wider knife and you’re not sure, go Large.
Flashlight compatibility
Choose your flashlight diameter at checkout. Five options:
- 15 mm (0.59″) — Olight i3t, ReyLight Pineapple Mini
- 18 mm (0.71″) — Olight i5t, Okluma DC0
- 21 mm (0.83″) — Olight Baton 3
- 25 mm (0.98″) — Arkfield Pro & Ultra
- 27 mm (1.06″) — Fenix PD35R
Not sure of your flashlight’s diameter? Message me the model before ordering and I’ll confirm the right fit.
How it’s built
The construction sequence on the v4 is not obvious from the outside — which is exactly the point.
Most leather organizers are assembled the easy way: stitch the base, glue and stitch the top, done. The v4 doesn’t work like that. Because the top section is physically connected to the loop part, the build order has to be exact. The top section gets stitched first. Then the right side of the base is glued and stitched halfway. Then the main top section is glued and stitched into position. Only then can the other half of the base be glued and closed out.
Four stages. Each one has to be right before the next one starts. There’s no correcting a mistake at stage three by going back to stage one.
This is why it takes as long as it takes. Not because leather work is slow — because this particular construction requires a specific order and doesn’t forgive shortcuts. The result isn’t a pouch that holds some tools. It’s a piece of gear with a defined structure, built to stay that way. Carry it daily for a decade and the shape will hold.
The leather
- Black (Koala) by Conceria Puccini Attilio (Tuscany, Italy) — full-grain French bovine shoulder, 100% vegetable-tanned with Quebracho and Chestnut extracts. Smooth, firm, even surface. Minimal marking, develops a quiet patina over time.
- Tobacco & Olmo by Badalassi Carlo (Tuscany, Italy) — Wax Pull-Up leather in two colors combined: Tobacco on the main body, Olmo on the pen and prybar section. The same two-color combination available on the Venturer v2 wallet. Wax Pull-Up means scratches and marks rub out with your thumb, and the contrast between the two tones deepens with carry.
All full-grain — the top layer of the hide, not corrected or bonded scraps.
Who it’s not for
If you carry a full-size multitool and need a wider main slot, the First Mate Fatty is the right move. If you don’t carry a flashlight, the Sailor sheath handles knife-only carry. The v4 is built for a specific loadout — if yours matches, it’ll fit like it was made for you.
FAQ
What’s different from the original First Mate?
The original First Mate (2020) had a wider, more open design. The v4 is more compact, more specific — four dedicated slots rather than a general pocket. It holds more tools in a tighter footprint.
Does my flashlight fit if it has a crenelated bezel or clip?
The diameter spec refers to the body diameter. If your flashlight has a wider head or an unusual clip, message me the model and I’ll check before you order.
Can I carry a multitool instead of a knife?
Depends on the tool. Slim multitools like the Leatherman Skeletool CX might fit the Medium. For larger multitools, the First Mate Fatty is the better fit.
Does the pen slot fit a Fisher Space Pen or similar thick pen?
The pen slot fits most standard pens up to 12 cm (4.7″) length. For pens with wider barrels, message me the model to confirm before ordering.
How long does it take to make?
Each organizer is cut and stitched by hand in my workshop in Kyiv. The build sequence has four stages that have to go in order — production is typically 3–7 business days before shipping.
Who makes it and where?
I do — Vitalii, by hand, in the Sparrow’s Nest workshop in Kyiv, Ukraine. The First Mate has been part of Pirate Goods since day one in 2020. This is the version I’m most proud of. Every order ships with a handwritten note. 7,000+ orders, 700+ five-star reviews.

The Seven-Pass Polish
Most edges get one coat of paint and call it done. Ours don’t.
I learned a polishing method from an old shoemaker I met in my grandma’s village. He walked me through it once, years ago. I lost touch with him not long after. It took me 5 years to build my own compound formula around what he taught me — that part’s mine, and it’s staying that way.
Now every edge gets seven hand-polished passes before it leaves my bench. No shortcuts. No paint sealing it shut. Just leather, polished the old way, until it holds a shine on its own.
Run your thumb along it. That’s the difference.
Hey, I’m Vitalii — the maker behind Pirate Goods. I’ve been hand-stitching every wallet, sheath, and organizer in my Kyiv workshop since 2020. If anything’s ever off with your order, message me directly — I answer every email myself.
