The First Mate is a leather pocket organizer that holds your knife, flashlight, and pen in a single slot. Fits in a front pocket. Available with or without a pen loop on the side — with the loop it’s 120mm wide, without it’s 105mm.

How it carries

The main slot takes your knife and flashlight side by side, slots in from the top. The pen loop sits on the outer edge if you choose it. Everything stays in place without rattling. If you’ve been shoving a knife and flashlight into your pocket separately and they keep shifting around, this fixes that.

The leather (and why it’s named on the label)

  • Crazy Horse (Rusty) — waxed pull-up. Scratches rub out with your thumb, darkens with carry.
  • Ponte Wax (Tan) — vegetable-tanned, smooth, natural color that patinas gradually.
  • Ponte (Natural) — lighter natural color, vegetable-tanned, patinas gradually.
  • Koala (Black) — smooth, even, minimal marking.

All full-grain — the top layer of the hide, not corrected or bonded scraps.

Who it’s not for

If you carry a multi-tool and need more room, the First Mate Fatty is the bigger version. If you want something more compact for a smaller knife, look at the First Mate v3.

FAQ

What knife and flashlight sizes fit?
Full-size folding knives like Spyderco Para 3, Benchmade Bugout, and similar — roughly 120mm tall. Flashlights up to AA diameter fit alongside.

Do I need the pen loop?
Only if you carry a pen daily. Without it the organizer is 15mm narrower.

Does the leather scratch?
Crazy Horse (Rusty) marks with use — most scratches rub out with your thumb. All others are smoother.
