The leather: Tempesti, custom hand dyed Olive color. The Tempesti tannery has its roots in Tuscany, dating back to 1946 when brothers Tullio and Osvaldo Tempesti, both workers in the same field, decided to start their own business.

And here is the making story of my Olive Wax Leather

I wanted to make an olive leather.

That sounds simple enough.

But the more I looked at the olive leathers I liked, the less interested I became in simply finding the right shade of green. I wanted something deeper. Warmer. Something that didn’t look like it had been painted green yesterday.

I wanted it to look old before it was old.

So I started with a piece of natural vegetable-tanned leather and began experimenting.

The first layer was a mixture of yellow, black, and a touch of brown. Not enough black to make it grey, and not enough yellow to make it bright. The goal was somewhere in between — that difficult olive that seems to change depending on the light.

Then I left it alone.

Once the dye had settled, I buffed the surface and started working in oils. This was the part where the leather began to change character. The color became deeper and warmer, and the grain started to develop those subtle variations I was looking for.

But it still wasn’t there.

It looked like dyed leather.

I wanted it to look like waxed leather.

So I went further.

I worked in a blend of beeswax, carnauba wax, oils and cocoa butter, warming the leather gently so the finish could move into the grain rather than simply sitting on top of it.

Then came another layer of carnauba wax.

And that’s when things got interesting.

The surface stopped looking perfectly uniform. The darker areas became deeper. The warmer tones started showing through. Light caught the grain differently from one spot to another.

I kept buffing it until the leather developed that slightly hazy, almost smoky appearance — the kind of finish that makes you want to run your fingers across it just to see what happens.

And that’s probably my favorite part.

Because this leather isn’t meant to stay exactly like this.

The wax will move. The surface will polish where your hands touch it. The high points will become lighter while the deeper grain stays dark. Scratches won’t necessarily ruin it — they’ll become part of it.

It should get better by being used.

That was the whole point of the experiment.

I wasn’t trying to make perfectly uniform olive leather.

I was trying to make leather with depth, movement and a little bit of history built into it from day one.

Every piece comes out slightly different.

And honestly, I think that’s exactly how it should be.

From natural hide to deep olive, finished by hand with layers of dye, oil and wax — this is my vision of Olive Wax leather.
